The standpoints are different, because Mr. Chamberlains career passed through so many phases. His sympathisers in his early days were later his strongest opponents: some of those who were his colleagues before 1903 were afterwards to be his severest critics. To obtain anything like a full view of his work some sort of symposium is necessary. The various contributors to the volume have very special qualifications for their task.
